Novellas and Short Stories
There are always times when you are busy and you don’t have a lot of time to read, much less an in-depth novel of over 50,000 words. That is what I love about the rise of indie authors and self-published works. Indie authors don’t have a determined length, can pick their own theme for the books they publish, and as long as their characters fall in love and have a HEA, their characters can take any journey they want before they fall in love. Just as in life, some romances take years to develop, while others take weeks to months, and with indie authors, you can find a novella readily available as often as you can find full-length novels. The shorter reads have as much character development and plot as normal length novels, but the conflict and relationship develop far faster.
Because I outline, research, develop characters, and everything else that goes along with writing a book, I have a limited amount of time to read at night for leisure. At those times, I choose a short story or novella that is short, sweet (most likely steamy), and have characters that fall in love quickly, yet deeply. Below are some of the short stories and novellas that I have enjoyed over the years. I also go back to them from time to time, when I need inspiration or I just want a quick read that puts a smile on my face.
Fatman and Robyn by Jaid Black
Jake Chamberlin, star quarterback of the New York Bloods, has a not-so-little secret—he’s into chubby chicks. He does all he can to resist temptation, but when Jake bumps into the gorgeous Robyn DiMarco at a bistro in Little Italy, all bets are off.
My Rating and Review
Considering this was a novella of sorts, only 51 pages, I fell in love with the characters, Robyn and Jake. I love how Robyn didn’t care about what anyone thought of her and how close she was to her family, and Jake, who thought that not falling for someone skinny would be a detriment, he fell for Robyn, hard, the moment he met her. This is a sexy and funny must read!!
Tempting Prudence by Melissa Schroeder
Prudence Merriweather is a woman who knows what she wants. The only problem is that what she wants is Jonas Smith and he is totally out of her league. The curvy accountant thinks a man like him could never be interested in her.
Jonas has had a crush on Pru since he first met her. When he spots her eyeing chocolate covered cherries at The Sweet Shoppe he can’t resist buying them for her…then feeding them by hand to her later that evening.
The passion they share is more than either of them expected, but will they take a chance on love or lose it all?

Until one afternoon when David has a major art project to finish and a model who’s a no-show. Wiley offers to pose for him—and it sure feels like the heat between them is mutual.
Could Derek have been wrong about his best friend for all these years? Would David’s dreams about Wiley finally come true? The only thing David knows is that one way or another he’ll find out for sure…tonight.
My Rating and Review
I really enjoyed getting to know David and Wiley. Their relationship developed in a sweet and natural way. David’s older brother Derek, had been best friends with Wiley, who David had been attracted to for years. Derek tells David that Wiley isn’t gay over and over again, but it doesn’t stop David’s attraction. As Wiley helps David with an art project, their feelings are shown and they decide to pursue their relationship. I loved this story!
