Jake Winters is out of rehab and coming to grips with his demons. When he meets his sister’s roommate, Jake believes Penny might be that someone who can help him find life after rock star status…until her secrets blow up his world.
With a government agent turned hit man closing in on her, Penny and Jake race to expose the presidential contender behind the murders of her family. Even if they win the race with death, the murder that stands between them could end their hope for a new life.

Jake nodded, but all he could concentrate on were Penny’s last words before the officer appeared. When they were alone again, he threw up his hands. “What do you mean, go back to Phoenix? Why the hell would I do that? My sister’s been murdered, and I want to find out why.”

She turned her back on him, went to the open door of the bathroom, and lifted her clothes from the hook. Beneath the thin, hospital gown her spine was straight, her movements tight, as if coiled and ready to spring.

“Penny, I know how much she meant to you.” How much she meant to both of them. He wanted to hold her, share their loss. “I’m not leaving you.”

Untying the gown, she let it drop around her feet, and sidestepped out of the heap. She pulled the dark gray sweater over her head then stepped into black velvet jeans. She wouldn’t make eye contact, wouldn’t speak as she sat on the green plastic chair.

This was killing him. He needed to hold her, help her with her pain—his pain. Haltingly, he made his way to her, touched her head, and waited while she zipped her boots. “Penny.” She resisted, but he tipped her chin, forcing her to look up. “Come on, baby. You don’t have to worry about me leaving you.”

      “You will.”

“When I tell you the truth, you will.”

Character Interview

What impression do you make on people when they first meet you?

That depends on where we are. I’m the evening manager of a reportedly haunted hotel. Several years ago, I got into the Goth thing…you know all black. It really fit in with the haunted thing. Now, I still keep up that style for when I’m at work so I come off kind of out there. Outside of work, I think I’m pretty easy to know, but I don’t open up much. I’m private.

How about after they’ve known you for a while?

There are a couple of people who I’ve allowed to get close. But even with them, I have my secrets.

What is your profession?

Evening manager of an historical hotel.

Tell me about your best friend

Mandy is one special lady. She saved my life, really. I was only a teenager when I landed in Flagstaff, running for my life. Mandy took me in, made me feel like her sister.

What’s the most important thing in your life?

I’d say family, if I had any. It’s what I want.

You’re thoughts on love?

Until recently, I didn’t think love could have a place in my life. I had so many secrets. Then I met Jake.

Your quirky habits?

Because I was in hiding for thirteen years, out of necessity I shied away from technology. I couldn’t afford to be traced. So, I’ve never owned a computer or a cell phone. And Jake thinks I’m nuts because I won’t use a microwave. Food is not healthy after being nuked.

What are you most afraid of?

For thirteen years, I’ve lived with the fear of whoever murdered my parents finding me. Now that Jake is in my life, and the murder knows where I am, I fear pushing Jake away. I know I have to.

What was your first thought or impression when you met the person you fell in love with?

I first met Jake when I was a teen, and he was a rock star. I was, of course, totally in lust with him. Then he opened his lude mouth and put his hands where they weren’t invited. Now, years later, a rehabbed Jake is everything a woman would want. It took me awhile to get past that first impression.

What do you like most about the person you fell in love with?

Jake is a family man all the way. His sister, my best friend Mandy, means the world to him. The way he feels about his family touches me deeply.
