Book Spotlight and Character Interview – Love & Mayhem by Luanna Stewart
Love & Mayhem
by Luanna Stewart
Sybil is happily on the shelf, tending to her sheep. But she fears she’ll depart this life without experiencing physical love, which she suspects is rather enjoyable. When her long-lost fiancé returns from sea, she decides he’s the lucky man who’ll receive her virginity.
Max is eager to return to his sugar plantation and has no intention of remaining long in London. However, he didn’t bargain on a wilful, pretty, exasperating spinster determined to take him to her bed.
He insists on marriage but she wants only his body. Her heart is not part of the deal. Unfortunately, love doesn’t always follow the rules.
“I see all sorts of advantages to the married state.” He brought her hand to his mouth, kissing each knuckle in turn before kissing her palm. Then he flicked his tongue over the inside of her wrist. She bit back a moan. Who knew the wrist was such a sensitive spot?
She forced her mind back to the task at hand. Which, when you came to think of it, served the other task as well. Namely, getting him to flick his tongue on other sensitive parts of her body. She took a deep breath. “Some enjoy those advantages without the bother of a marriage ceremony.”

Character Interview with Max Bretherton
What impression do you make on people when they first meet you?
I daresay they think I’m a properly raised gentleman. Upon closer inspection they might question that assumption, and rightly so.
How about after they’ve known you for a while?
They’ll see that I’ve been college educated and have worked hard for my wealth. I rarely let casual acquaintances discover all that came between my childhood and the man I am today.
What is your profession?
The answer for polite society is that I’m owner of a sugar plantation on the island of Jamaica. The rest of the tale is that I’m a former pirate.
Tell me about your best friend.
The friend I’ve known the longest, a chap from school, is a nincompoop who deserves to be placed in the stocks and have rotten eggs tossed at his head.
Describe your ideal mate.
*devilish grin* Warm, loving, with curves in all the right places. Also smart enough to know her own mind. A sense of adventure will serve her well if she chooses to make her life with me.
What’s the most important thing in your life?
My freedom. By that I mean the ability to live my life as I choose, not as others deem proper.
Your thoughts on love?
Your greatest extravagance?
Well-tailored clothing and properly fitted boots. Physical comfort is vital for my happiness.
Is there anything you haven’t done that you want to do?
Can’t really think of anything. But if I do you can be sure I’ll give it a try.
Your quirky habits?
You’ll have to ask someone else about that. <grins>
What quality do you like most in a man/woman?
What trait do you most despise?
Dishonesty, no surprise there. I’ll forgive any transgression except a lie.
What are you most afraid of?
Losing my freedom, either by circumstance or by age. I dread becoming old and feeble, no longer able to sail my sloop, or ride a horse.
What do you value the most?
I believe I answered this question already. Is this repetition for a purpose? Or are you attempting to catch me in a falsehood?
Salt cod. Strange choice, I’m sure, but it kept body and soul together on more than one occasion so I equate it with comfort.
What would you consider your perfect night out?
A night out where? You mean an entertainment of some sort? I would most enjoy dinner in a fine restaurant followed by a trip to the theatre.
What was your first thought or impression when you met the person you fell in love with?
I was dumbfounded by her beauty and grace. And her strength.
What would you change about the person you fell in love with?
If it were at all possible I would have her take life less seriously. But I doubt that will happen, because that’s part of what makes her who she is.
What do you like most about the person you fell in love with?
We don’t have enough time for me to expound on all her excellent qualities.
What would you change about yourself?
Ha! Here’s another question best answered by someone else.
